Abstract half sunset half night picture

Hey everyone! Finally back with another quilled picture. This time I wanted to quill my mom something. It's in a pretty small frame, 6 by 6", so it couldn't be too complicated. We finally agreed on a sunset. It was hard to find the right picture, but luckily I found a good one. I made it abstract as well to go with my style! I had a lot of fun 'blending' with the coils. Luckily I have lots of different shades. Like a freaking crapload. So that was no problem!  Each coil is three inches, aside from the coils that make up the tree which are two inches. Three inches is the perfect size for me. Good enough to blend and make it detailed, but not too small.

If anyone has any questions on how to make something like this or anything, don't be afraid to ask. Or maybe you should, maybe I'm secretly a terrorist trying to wreak havoc on your mind by hiding subliminal messages into my quilled pieces.

3D quilled lady rabbit

I made this bunny last year around Easter and since we took out Easter stuff, I found her again. I had lots of fun making her. I wanted to make a cartoon looming rabbit so I did! I had to place her on a grass patch so she would stay up. She is fairly large too, a few inches high. The strips on her are 1/16 inch, but I actually just cut 1/8 strips in half with small, precision scissors. I do have some narrow strips but I decided for how little I use them cutting them in half is fine. The only time it isn't good is if you need them to be cut with precision if you're making a flat picture or something. Or if you're not good cutting that precisely. But if you're a quiller, I think you have to be precise anyway.

Abstract colorful tree sunset picture painting

I found an 8X8 inch frame that I had bought a while ago in my craft closet. I wanted to quill an entire picture this time! I started it about two weeks ago. As I made clear in my abstract man post, I like abstract modern looking things. Modern paintings included. But there are only some modern pieces I even like! Some are just swaths of color and that's just not my thing. I want it to look sort of like something, I don't know! I know you could just say this looks like a tree by a sunset with random colors, but I see much more than that! It's like the tree of life in all of the known universes, like the multiverse, which is the theory that there are an unlimited amount of parallel universes and we live in just one of them. Perhaps it could look like an endless tree growing and sprouting random bubble things and one is our universe? I don't know I'm weird, most of you probably didn't get that xD.

Onto the picture itself... I feel as though the longer I quill, the longer it takes me to complete each one. It should be the opposite, right?  No, I'm just getting more OCD about it. The coils are only three inch coils, with a few exceptions with the tree, and the white outline, and the bubbles (some are insanely tiny.. Like half an inch.) Part of the tree are regular coils, some really loose coils, and part just paper folded into half and thirds. I used so much pins it's not funny! Most all of the coils had two pins in them. It took like sixty hours it's insane! But so worth it. I am going to start a new one soon too for my uncle. He has been wanting some big quilled thing from me for a while.

Quilled 'Phoenix' bird picture

Once again, I made this a while ago, though I'm pretty sure I made this after my abstract man. I was looking up what to quill to fit my frame. It's 8x10 inches I think? Something like that. I saw an abstract looking bird, so I thought why not! Then I decided to quill some clouds and a sun for it too.

If you look closely, you can see my ipad in its case in the reflection of the glass. Ha!

I put glued the quills onto light blue card stock and put some bright green around it for just a little something! Most of the coils are six inches, but some May be different, like parts of the coils on the bird. I decided to call it a Phoenix, though it could be anything, because that is what my younger sister kept calling it! I have it hanging in my room, but I had to take it down and snap the pictures by my window because it was so dark where it was hanging. Having a basement bedroom will do that!

Hi everyone I'm sure everyone has forgotten about little old me already. That's okay because a year sure is a long time! As it says at the top of my blog, I will never quit quilling xD. I have quilled since I last posted but I just haven't posted anything. It's a hassle to take pictures then put them on the computer and then write something about it because I don't know if anyone cares. But people must because this blog has gotten a lot more views. I know I'm often an internet lurker and don't post comments. But of course I do love comments...

Well, a week or so ago, I decided to hunker down and organize my strips because they were such a mess in my droors (I know that isn't a word but I say droors). A complete nightmare, I'm sure many of you feel my pain! Well, I looked up the best way to store strips and I combined an idea with my own. In my craft closet, my dad had some metal hook things and put those into the wall and we bought a dowel rod. Then I clipped each color with a binder clip. I used large ones. Then I bought binder rings so I could easily take them on and off, and I also used a hexagonal punch to write the color and brand of strip and used a small hole punch to attach it with the ring to the dowel rod. It is working really well! I think it looks kind of pretty. It is weighing it down a lot. My dad said he was going to put a third hook in in the middle, but there is no telling when he will get around to doing that! I'm not even done yet, I'm not sure how I will deal with my narrow and wide strips!

I just got the new ipad air a few days ago and that's my biggest motivation to post something... It has a pretty good camera unlike my old ipad 2! Less steps to posting that way. I'm on my ipad a lot, even typing up this post.

So this is one thing I wanted to show you all that I've made. I made this like three months ago, but it's nothing new. As you may know if you've read my about me, I'm pretty young (20 now. I should update and delete parts of my profile I suppose... and update my picture, I was like fifteen in that picture! I'm not one for selfies...) and I do love quilling obviously and quilling flowers, though they are often more colorful than many people quill flowers. I also do like modern looks even though that often seems to be a different genre than quilling stuff.

I was determined to quill an abstract sculpture and this is what I came up with. It's an abstract man. I think it looks like he's cheering.

I decided to use these colors because it matches the color of my room, but I still haven't figured out where I want to put it. I wish the lighting was better, but sadly it's a depressing trying to be spring day. It's finally above freezing here in the tundra of Wisconsin. It was a nightmare winter here. There was a handful of days the highs were in the negatives. In one of my classes, we learned this was a record low December/January/February

3D quilled 'Just Hatched' Easter Chick

 

I've been quilling over a bunch of plastic eggs for Easter- it's such a fun, easy thing to do!  We only have one big one, so we actually found more at Wal Mart last night. 88 cents for like six of them, so if you are thinking of doing the same thing, it isn't expensive at all... I will post the eggs in another post sometime, because I still plan to do more.

 

If you plan to do something like this, plan to use a lot of paper, even if the egg is on the smaller size.  This baby chick is four inches tall.  I used a whole bunch of yellow strips! Doesn't it look freaking excited that its out of its shell?

Hey all, if anyone is left, that is... you all probably thought that I did quit quilling...well, not quite.  I haven't been in the mood to really quill in the longest time... My excuse should be that I've been too busy with college, but that isn't really the case.

 

Now that it's my spring break (yeah, 'spring', spring with snow... everyone around here is really sick of the stuff! We have a little over a foot of snow on the ground.  Anyone out there feel my pain?), I wanted to actually do somthing... you see, my spring break is before my friends' that attend different colleges in the same system of Wisconsin schools.  Anyway, blah blah. The bowl is the largest I've ever made it- 30 strips! I wanted to make something big so I could make more detailed flowers and so it could be easier to see due to its bigness.

 

And I wanted to make it a bowl instead of a pot because it could be fatal to try to make a pot so big, because I could easily destroy it, and re-curling thirty strips is rather daunting.  For the yellow flower, I cut the fringed middle on the inside on a forty five degree angle, something I surely will do again!  I've been quilling some easter eggs too... so I may post a few of those sometime soon!
